If you are traveling on MIT business, you must register your travel on the MIT Travel Registry. This will enable MIT to help you in an emergency and give you the latest on travel concerns or restrictions in the areas you are traveling to.
To ensure your safety and security while traveling, please check the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisories.
Insurance
While traveling for business, MIT faculty, students, staff are automatically covered for emergency medical, security, and natural disaster evacuation, and other accidents. Learn more about MIT's Business Travel Accident Insurance policy as administered by the VPF Office of Insurance.
Individually purchased trip protection/cancellation or travel insurance is not an MIT reimbursable expense. If you do purchase insurance for travel on MIT business, you will not be reimbursed.
Faculty and employees insured by MIT Health Plans are covered during domestic and international travel. If you are not covered by one of the Institute's health insurance plans, check your coverage with your health insurance company before traveling.
Students enrolled in an MIT health plan are covered for domestic travel. If you are not covered by one of the Institute's health insurance plans, check your coverage with your health insurance company before traveling. If a student is traveling internationally on MIT-related business, they have primary coverage under the the MIT Study Abroad Insurance program. Students should also maintain their regular health care coverage, as it will cover a broader range of activities. Additional information is available through the MIT Office of Insurance.
You should not purchase insurance when renting a car domestically. This expense will not be reimbursed to you by MIT (with the exception of renting a car in Alaska or Puerto Rico). When available, rent vehicles from MIT Preferred suppliers Avis, Budget, Enterprise, or National as insurance coverage is included in the MIT rental agreement. If a traveler does not use a Preferred supplier and gets into a car accident, there may be additional expenses for the department, lab, center, or institute (DLCI).
You are strongly discouraged from renting a car internationally in most countries; however, if you must rent a car internationally, you must purchase liability and physical damage car rental insurance. MIT will reimburse this expense.
